Bonnie Foster seems to be a magnet for
interesting experiences. Last Sunday about 5:30 AM, while it was still
dark, she and Jim were driving down the Glenn Highway to meet Leslie
and me for a training run when someone shot out the side window in
her van. Bonnie has a dog box, but her 6 dogs are so well behaved
she normally just carries them loose in her mini-van. Everyone was
pretty shook and Jim had to climb in back to block the window and
keep the dogs from jumping out onto the freeway. The police said that
there has been several attacks in the last couple of weeks, including
one 30 minutes before Bonnie and Jim. They think it is kids with a
pellet gun. It sure put a damper on an otherwise nice day.

After the training run Bonnie, Jim, Marti
and I drove to Eklutna and took Marti on her first 4-wheeler ride.
Bonnie got a great picture of me. If I ever want to play the Rabbi
in “Fiddler on the Roof” I’ll use this photo in
the proposal. Then Bonnie got another nice picture of Marti and I
with Eklutna Reservoir as a backdrop. In the next couple of weeks
we will probably do some training here. You can tell we are blessed
by beautiful country.
You can tell how well training is going by how hard I have to look
for stories. ;-) The dogs are pumped and doing very well. I like to
think it is something special I’m doing, but I’ve talked
to two other mushers who are reporting the same thing. It must be
the weather. Normally in late August and early September I’m
fighting the heat and loosing a few days training days because it
is too hot to run. This year we have been blessed with average temperatures
and haven’t have to run over 50 degrees since the first week.
While everyone is pretty excited about the coming season, Dash and
Mocha stand out. Both dogs are much more exuberant than last year.
Mocha is so wound up she cannot hardly control herself, barking to
go from the moment I drop the dogs at the track. Dash has learned
to be quiet, but you can see the dancing in her eyes as she stands
on her hind feet and bats both front feet at anyone who passes. Thyme
is still playing with rocks and sticks in the dog lot, barking at
them if they behave the way she wishes. Rom is carrying his rock around
when I go out to feed and drops it with an audible thump when I put
his dish down. Throttle is firmly convinced I am starving her and
is almost always the first one done eating. Platinum is barking more
and I’m trying to teach him that I like him excited, but quiet.
He should take notes from Dash.
This Saturday is kennel day at our vets and all the dogs have appointments
for annual shots. That means they get Sunday off and will have to
run Monday to make up for it.
Keep ‘em Northbound
