R Northbound Dogs
~ Our Retired Dogs ~

Bass (think music, not fish): M, DOB 9/8/97 – Susan Butcher breeding. I purchased Bass as a started leader from Jeff King in December 2001 and he quickly became the main “go to” dog in my kennel. Bass is not the fastest dog, but he is utterly reliable and there is absolutely no quit in him. We have had numerous adventures and I trust him implicitly. He has trained my new crop of leaders. Bass was the star of the 2006 Iditarod team, running all the gnarly portions of the trail in single lead. Neither ice, high winds, blowing snow, blown in trail, or blizzard conditions deterred this great leader. Bass is now semi-retired. I’ll let him run with the main team as long as he wants, but his new task is to learn how to hold down the floor in front of the couch.

7 of 9: F, DOB April 1997 – John Barron breeding – leader. I purchased 7 when I first started to build a racing team in September 1998. John didn’t really want to sell her – as a yearling she was running swing on his main race team – but I sweet talked John into it and have never regretted it. 7 is a smooth sweet dog, rather shy, but totally devoted to me. She isn’t a strong dominant leader to train others and go through tough situations on her own, but is a very steady leader and always seems to make the guys she’s running with happier and stronger with her presence. She is very much a team player. 7 of 9 is mother to Picard and Kira (now with Bonnie Foster) and grandmother to Bass’ pups. Seven is a funny girl. Bonnie and I both tried to make a house dog out of her, but she doesn’t like change and wasn’t happy. So she will live out her days in the kennel, and is now her usual shy, but happy self.
